Beginning Finger-style Guitar

Learn the basics of finger-style acoustic guitar used in classical music and other genres and acquire skills necessary for performing guitar melodies with simple harmonic accompaniment. Topics include tuning, positioning, fingerings for both hands, simple sight-reading, some chords and easy scales and arpeggios, as well as the rudiments of musical notation and rhythm. This course is intended for individuals with no prior experience. Students must provide their own acoustic guitars. 6 weeks.

Beginning Plectrum (Strumming) Guitar
(Formerly Class Guitar I)
Fee: $85
Location: Music Building TBA
Learn the basics of guitar playing with a pick (plectrum) and acquire skills necessary for common strumming and picking in popular musical styles. Topics include tuning, positioning, left-hand fingerings, chords through recognition, use of charts and diagrams, simply sight-reading, and easy scales and arpeggios, as well as the fundamentals of musical notation and rhythm. This course is intended for individuals with no prior experience. Students must provide their own acoustic guitars. 6 weeks.

Class Guitar I
This class has been replaced with Beginning Finger-style Guitar and Beginning Plectrum Guitar.
Class Piano I
Fee: $85*
Location: Music Building W183
Those with little or no piano-playing experience have nothing to fear. This course teaches basic note-reading, keyboard skills and solid piano technique. Learn to sight-read simple pieces in both classical and popular genres and apply basic music theory to the music learned in class. Purchase of the textbook: Piano 101, Alfred Publishing Company, $24.95, is necessary for the class. *Textbook NOT included. 6 weeks.

Class Piano II
Fee: $85

Students with prior experience in piano who want to brush up on their skills, receive individualized instruction and cover piano technique, sight-reading skills and applicable music theory. Students enjoy making progress at their own speed and benefiting from the chemistry of a group setting, while learning the basics of keyboard improvisation and piano pieces in various styles. No textbook needed. 6 weeks.

Class Voice
Fee: $85
Location: Music Building TBA
This course develops techniques for solo singing in a fun and comfortable environment. The following elements are emphasized: physical alignment, posture and relaxation; breathing and breath management; vocalization and good tone production; song preparation and interpretation; stage presence, confidence and communication skills. Students sing as a group and work with the instructor individually in a master-class format. 6 weeks.
